After his stay in China, De Fremery returned to the Dutch East Indies in May 1940. A month later, he resumed his military career as a volunteer colonel in the reserve, serving on the general staff. In March 1942, he was captured by the Japanese, holding the titular rank of major-general. De Fremery survived captivity, returned to Batavia in 1946, and retired once again later that same year. On March 7, 1942, the ship Poelau Bras was attacked by Japanese aircraft during the evacuation from Java and sank after being severely damaged. Approximately 130 to 140 people lost their lives; only a few lifeboats managed to escape. Major General Henri Johan Diederik de Fremery was among the survivors, he even made drawings depicting the situation on board during the bombardment. In March 1942, he was captured by the Japanese, holding the titular rank of major-general. De Fremery survived captivity, returned to Batavia in 1946, and retired once again later that same year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Henri Johan Diederik de Fremery (1875–1972) was a colonel in the KNIL who played a remarkable role during the turbulent 1930s in East Asia. After retiring in the early 1930s, he joined a small group of Western military specialists assisting Chiang Kai-shek in modernizing the Nationalist armed forces. For several years he served as an adviser and later remained in Shanghai, where he maintained his expertise and network within military and diplomatic circles.

In the late 1930s, De Fremery produced valuable reports on the Sino-Japanese War, at the request of the General Staff of the Royal Netherlands Indies Army, the KNIL, documents that shed a sharp light on a conflict that permanently reshaped the balance of power in East Asia, a time when information from Western observers was extremely rare. During World War II, he was taken prisoner on Formosa (modern-day Taiwan), a place that would later also serve as a refuge for Chiang Kai-shek. His accounts and reports provide important insight into the military events and political context of the era.

In 1891, he arrived in the United States aboard the Normandie from Le Havre, France, and became a naturalized American citizen in 1918. In San Francisco, Minetti became a respected figure in the city’s musical scene. He conducted the San Francisco Sinfonietta Society and was a member of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, admired for his skill and dedication. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 brought a heavy personal loss, as his home was completely destroyed by the quake and subsequent fire. He and his wife lost all their possessions, including several prized violins, among them Guadagni, Amati, Testore, and Marchetti instruments. Despite this setback, Minetti remained active in the city’s musical life, known for his resilience and lifelong commitment to music.
